CHAPTER HOLIDAY PARTY SERVES DOUBLE DUTY
In addition to the typical festivities, it was also a celebration of 70 years of SPJ membership for Austin Kiplinger.
Kiplinger, the chairman of the Kiplinger Washington Editors and a D.C. Pro member, graciously hosted the party at the Editor’s building.
The first floor is a seldom-seen museum of 5,000 Washington-themed prints, paintings, maps, photographs and papers depicting the architectural history of the capital city.
In a short but rousing speech, Kiplinger said it’s incumbent on SPJ to “lead the charge,” particularly in setting ethical standards, during journalism’s turbulent times.
Kiplinger joined SPJ while at Cornell University in New York in 1936.
The chapter presented Kiplinger with a plaque for his devotion to SPJ. D.C. Pro President Willie Schatz read aloud a letter of congratulations and thanks from SPJ President Christine Tatum.
Kiplinger is also editor emeritus of The Kiplinger Washington Letter, one of the most widely read business and economics forecasting publications in the world. His career has spanned more than five decades as a reporter, broadcast commentator and editor, specializing in business and political affairs.
