The Society of Professional Journalists is pleased to announce an additional winner in the 2006 Sigma Delta Chi Awards for excellence in journalism.
Laure Quinlivan, Phil Drechsler and Bob Morford from WCPO-TV in Cincinnati have been named as winners in the Television Documentaries category for small market stations. Their documentary, “New Visions of Vine Street,” was a five-year progress report on the efforts to revitalize the heart of inner-city Cincinnati.
“This documentary showed great vision (and) initiative, and it was journalism that the community needed. This is not a story that just falls into your lap; you have to recognize it and make it happen,” the judges said. “The project had great use of file video and graphics to help viewers with the timeline and progression of the story. The station obviously had a tremendous commitment to this neighborhood and its story.”
The recipients were honored with a framed plaque and bronze medallion.
“It’s a wonderful honor. The Society of Professional Journalists honors excellence, and it’s gratifying to be recognized,” Quinlivan said.
When the initial judging of the awards took place in March, an entry from KYW in Philadelphia titled, “Alex Scott: A Stand for Hope,” was named as the winner. It was discovered that this entry was judged in the wrong category, leading to the re-judging and the naming of WCPO-TV’s entry as an additional winner in the category.
The Sigma Delta Chi Awards date back to 1932, when the Society first honored six individuals for contributions to journalism. The current program began in 1939, when the organization awarded the first Distinguished Service Awards. These awards later became the Sigma Delta Chi Awards.
The deadline to enter the 2007 Sigma Delta Chi awards is Feb. 6. Visit www.spj.org/a-sdx.asp for more information.
