I found myself yelling “Amen, Brother!” and “You said it!” while reading Timothy McCarty’s “Education Toolbox” column on valuing student media (Quill, May/June 2013). I, too, receive dozens of requests from organizations offering “a great learning experience” by having students produce (usually free) videos for them.

In June 2011, I was in Amman, Jordan, participating in a UNESCO-sponsored workshop on updating journalism curricula across Iraqi universities.

The buzzword in academe these days is assessment. Today, accreditation organizations require institutions to have assessment methods in place for accreditation consideration. University administrators are asking departments to provide evidence that students are learning and applying what they’ve learned before granting a degree.
