Balancing early career decisions and personal life no easy task

Young journalists looking to develop their careers often move far from family and friends for experience in a bigger market or on a different beat. I’ve moved twice in the past two years. In March 2005, I started as online editor at the Pocono Record in Stroudsburg, Pa.

Appeal to different readers by tackling Web technology

My colleagues expect that I know about the latest and greatest technology in the field. As a 28-year-old online editor, I should, right? Well, I certainly don’t know about it all. The challenge that online editors face every day is determining what technology is worth in an investment of our resources.

Work in graduate school defines career path

When I started my current job in March 2005, I didn’t realize how well my post-grad experiences had prepared me for the challenges that I’d face. Both my freelance and graduate work laid a solid foundation for a successful career in online media, which I’ve started as the online editor at a community daily in northeast Pennsylvania.
