When the dot-com bubble burst early in this decade, several online news sites also felt the pinch. Layoffs at newspaper and magazine Web operations became common. In some cases, staff members about to feel the ax were asked to sign nondisparagement clauses to prevent laid-off employees from making derogatory comments about the company.
