When Philip Meyer published his book, “Precision Journalism,” in 1973, only a few newspapers had used computers to assist in their reporting. Meyer’s book introduced serious journalists to the idea of using social science methodology to uncover stories that public information officers, police chiefs and mayors would not willingly offer.
