From the President: Doubling down on SPJ
It was 229 years ago, on Dec. 15, 1791, that this nation adopted the 45 words of the First Amendment. And that set the foundation for everything our free press has done since. On that same date, in 1971, my parents welcomed me into the world and named me after Henry David Thoreau — and set the foundation for everything I’ve done since.

Pins, Pathways and Purpose: The challenges for membership organizations
SPJ has a new Executive Director. But rather than write a standard profile of him, Quill asked John Shertzer to write about his informed thoughts on the challenges facing membership organizations. I love membership associations. From the time I wore my blue corduroy FFA jacket in high school, and then my fraternity badge in college, and, soon after, my Kiwanis pin as a working professional, I have been attracted to organizations with missions devoted to making men and women better.

It’s a Saturday in mid-September and Nigel Poor and Earlonne Woods have just released Episode 1 of Season 3 of their hit podcast, Ear Hustle. The deadline for Episode 2 is in about 10 days, episode 3 two weeks after that, then four through eight, every two weeks through the end of the year.
